Considering the fact that the boat may be located far away from service centers and they are expensive like the accessories, learn to take good care and understand the functioning and the different parts better. Keeping the boat in good condition, neat and tidy, and ensuring optimum performance is quite possible with a bit of luck and experience. The task may seem overwhelming for the beginner, but the seniors would usually be around with some smart, practical tips based on experience. Don’t ever give up.
Appearances matter and usually indicate good health, just like with the washing and servicing of automobiles! Though the boat operates in the water, deliberate washing will fresh water will get rid of salt water residue. Otherwise, salt is corrosive, and metal parts will suffer. Use a soft bristle brush and a good soap prepared for gel coat, like marine boat wash or even car soap. Laundry soap would serve if nothing else is around.
Is the propeller in good condition?
Check on the propeller now and then by removing it to make sure that all is well. The fishing line could get entangled in the shaft. Is that has happened, the gear case needs to be checked. If gear case leaks happen, that will call for a lot of work, and it cannot be achieved DIY. With the propeller removed, examine if any damage has occurred. Dents would require repairs. The shaft will finally need waterproof grease. Reinstall and tighten the parts carefully together.
The oil change
Perhaps once a year, oil change in the boat engine will be required, but the frequency depends upon the model and type of boat. It cannot be done in a hurry and the dealer, or you will have to carry out the process. Use an oil extractor pump to remove the oil through the dipstick tube. Dealing with corrupted oil would require absorbent cloth near the oil filter. After warming up the engine, switch it off and remove the dipstick. Now slide the oil extractor suction tube in and pump the oil out which will remain in the tube until recycled. Replace the oil filter. Fill in the new oil through the port with the cap saying ‘Oil.’
A boat is complicated, and even a small one can have 10 DC electrical circuits, marine power inverter, deep cycle marine battery condition, a few pumps, and numerous fittings. Besides, expect to find a series of nuts and bolts. A larger boat would be comparable to a small building in systems. Locating and carrying out minor maintenance tasks may be entirely possible.
Take care of the shaft alignments that remain centered in the bearings. Replace shrunk anodes and examine gasket parts for salt stains. If the paint is cracking up, a new coat is required. Rusted parts need to be replaced, and sealant applied. If the gel coat is chipping, use epoxy filler. Gaskets and latch may need to be repaired or replaced if water is entering the engine. Make sure that the windshield is not scratched since that would prevent clear vision.
Identifying abnormal sounds would indicate something is going wrong. A gimbal bearing may need to be replaced. Alternatively, brakes may be malfunctioning. Removing the belts could show the source of the noise.
